APPELLANT'S OPENING BRIEF,
Statement of the Case.
This is a libel against the American steamer Santa
Rita for damages arising from her surrounding the
stern of the French barque ^^Boieldieu", lying at
Long Wharf in San Francisco Bay with infammable
oil and oil-soaked material, which caught fire and
seriously burned the latter vessel.
The ^^ Santa Rita", four hundred fift^^ feet long,
was lying on the north side of the wharf, parallel to
and about ninetv feet north of the ^^Whittlieburn"
